The founder and managing partner of Strategic Advocacy Law Firm, Bohdan Khmelnytsky, visited the European Parliament, where he had the opportunity not only to get acquainted with its work but also to attend one of its meetings.
The European Parliament is one of the most important institutions of the European Union and an international platform where decisions affecting the policy of the whole of Europe are made. The visit to this institution became a valuable professional experience for the head of Strategic Advocacy, which will help to develop human rights activities in Ukraine.
The European Parliament is the only legislative body of the EU that is elected by direct vote. It represents the citizens of the 27 countries of the European Union, adopts laws that regulate various spheres of life, approves the EU budget, oversees the activities of other institutions and engages in international cooperation.
The Parliament’s work is based on the rule of law, human rights protection and democratic principles. That is why membership in the organization is open to those countries that recognize these principles and guarantee their citizens fundamental freedoms.
“Being able to observe the work of an international legislative body of this level is an extremely valuable experience. Ukraine is now on the path to European integration, which means that we need to adopt the best practices to strengthen our legal system,” said Bohdan Khmelnytsky.
During the visit, the head of Strategic Advocacy also got acquainted with the history of the European Parliament. Its roots go back to 1952, when the first assembly was formed, which later became a full-fledged legislative body.
An interesting fact is that the main building of the European Parliament in Strasbourg is named after Louise Weiss, a French journalist, politician and feminist. Throughout her life, she fought for equal rights for women in society and politics. Moreover, she became the oldest member of the European Parliament, remaining a member until her death at the age of 90.
“The democratic values that Louise Weiss fought for are the basis of European politics today. In Ukraine, we also have to ensure equality, human rights protection and the rule of law as the key principles of our country,” Bohdan Khmelnytsky emphasized.
During his stay in the European Parliament, Bohdan Khmelnytsky exchanged experience with international colleagues, learned about the work of European institutions and mechanisms of legal protection of citizens.
The knowledge gained during this meeting can be useful for implementation in Ukraine, as many European legal mechanisms can help make Ukrainian justice more transparent, efficient and independent.
“Ukraine’s legal system is currently undergoing reform, and international experience is extremely important. We have to create conditions under which every Ukrainian will be confident in the fairness of justice,” said the head of Strategic Advocacy.
Strategic Advocacy continues its mission to protect the rights of Ukrainians, assist businesses and citizens in resolving legal issues by implementing best practices and international standards of human rights protection.
